What is Insomnia

Insomnia is something that can affect us at any age, whether it’s struggling to get to sleep at night, waking in the middle of the night, having broken, restless sleep or waking ridiculously early in the morning. It’s something most people can relate to at some point in their life. For some people lying awake at night, worrying is a normal. It shouldn’t be. Worries that are stuck in the mind can be played over and over long after the event often when no trigger has been released. For some, there may be underlying stressors that our subconscious mind brings to the fore once we are asleep, for others, it may just be that we feel there is a lot to do some wake up early to deal with it. Bed and restful sleep should be comfroting and soothing.

Mindfulness for insomnia

Some years ago, I was in a situation where my wife was expecting our child. It was an exciting and scary time in equal measures. My father was suffering from dementia and in the process of dying. To top it all, as chairman of the supporter’s trust for my local football club I was in the spotlight concerning a disagreement of the then chairman of the club itself. There was an awful lot of politics involved. Some rather nasty letters were posted through my door. There were also some less than flattering comments being made to the local press. As you can imagine, it was a very stressful time.

I was lying awake at 3.00 a.m. with thoughts racing through my mind when I decided to practice some of the mindfulness techniques learnt while training as a mindfulness practitioner. It’s fair to say I wasn’t the best subject; just laying there thinking that I couldn’t do it!  Suddenly I realised that I was giving myself a hypnotic command/suggestion. So I stopped. I began to work on self-hypnosis. Every time a thought came into my mind, be it good bad or indifferent, I imagined that I could wrap it up in a paper bag and throw it away. Suddenly I realised that I could control these random thoughts and make them go away ………. it was a revelation and such was the relief that I fell asleep in minutes after – bliss!! Anyone can do this with a little practice – try it. If you’d like to know more, of course, you could always give me a call.
